Batty Idea?

Racquet Sports Have Some New Boys (and Girls) in town. We take a look at the new games trying to court us (see what I did there?)

Will they be a Smash or Trash ?

We all know and love the traditional types of racquet sports as well as the relatively new in comparison racketball (racquetball in the USA) but if lurking just beneath the surface are a group of new young pretenders looking to get a slice of the pie.

Why not? If Racketball can snowball into the size it’s reaching in the UK then surely the racquet population are always willing to take on a new game to test their skill, fitness, agility, mental awareness and more.

The scoring isn’t all of a pickleand no gherkins are harmed in the process of making this steadily hatching like a pickled egg, sport.

The Low-Down

Pickle-ball® is played on a badminton-sized court: 20’ x 44.’ The ball is served diagonally (starting with the right-hand service-square), and points can only be scored by the side that serves.

Pickle-Ball paddles

Players on each side must let the ball bounce once before volleys are allowed, and there is a seven-foot no-volley zone on each side of the net, to prevent “spiking.” The server continues to serve, alternating service courts, until he or she faults. The first side scoring eleven points and leading by at least two points wins. Pickle-ball® can be played with singles or doubles.

Don’t get into a head spin when you take on the sneakily addictive and portable game. It’s a four-some (2 doubles) that the other half won’t mind getting stuck into.

The Low Down

360ball® is a racquet sport played by two players or between two teams of players (doubles) in a circular court. Players use racquets to strike a rubber ball onto a centrally placed concave disc.

The object of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that it bounces off the disc and lands within the boundary of the court or alternatively force an error on the part of your opponents. Players or teams must use two shots to play the ball before bouncing it off the disc. The use of two shots is obligatory.

During play and players must rotate around the disc and court.

No cheap teenage boy gags here please. Tug away…,

The Low Down

The game starts with a Tug-off, a tug-of-war between two players from each team.  The winner of the Tug-off wins possession of the ball.  Once both teams are ready, the offense advances with the goal of getting into the opponents goal while in possession of the Tugball™.  The offense can pass, throw, kick or run the ball in any direction.  The defence tries to steal the ball from the defence by intercepting a pass, picking up a missed catch or winning a duel.   (A duel is when a player from both teams have possession of the ball at the same time and literally tug it away from their opponent).

Knuckle Racket v

A pair of the knuckle rackets are held by each player, one in each hand in front of the respective knuckles. You basically “fight” with the ball by punching it against a single wall or in a racquetball court. Alternatively, you can play against an opponent using the same rules as in racquetball. It creates an intense workout combining some of the key elements to work a large number of muscle areas in the body.

War Ball

This is mine so of course I’ve sneaked it in. Using the elements of Dodge Ball but adapted to be easily played on Squash and Racketball courts across the UK and who knows world!

Two pairs take each other on with each side talking it in turns to be raiders or evaders. Raiders have a ball in which they can pass between themselves up to and including 3 times then aim at the evaders the other end of the court. Each team cannot move beyond the marked three metre mark and either evader can be hit directly or off the wall.

Evaders have one spa pad to hit away the ball. If that happens it’s no points for either side. If an evader fully evades the raiders throw they get a point but if hit anywhere bar the pad the raiders score. ?just before the throw is taken, raiders must shout 1 or 2 referring to the player they are aiming at. Raiders throw for 5 plays then swap positions with evaders. Teamwork, tactics, agility and accuracy all come in to play.
